Japanese for Travellers
A structured workshop series that gets you speaking, reading signs, and navigating Japan with confidence — built around real travel situations, not textbook grammar drills.
Six modules. One clear goal.
Modules across 8 weeks, each focused on a distinct travel context you will actually encounter.
Sound and Script Foundations
Hiragana, katakana, and pronunciation patterns that matter most for reading menus, signs, and transport boards.
- Hiragana reading drills
- Katakana for loan words
- Pitch accent basics
Getting Around and Staying Somewhere
Train stations, ticket machines, hotel check-in phrases, and asking for directions without freezing up.
- Transport vocabulary
- Accommodation requests
- Polite refusals and clarifications
Eating, Shopping, and Emergencies
Restaurant ordering, handling dietary needs, shopping interactions, and the phrases you need when something goes wrong.
- Ordering and allergies
- Price and payment phrases
- Emergency contact language
Workshops built around doing, not watching.
Each session opens with a real scenario — a train platform, a ramen counter, a pharmacy — and participants work through it using only what they have already learned. New language is introduced in context, not as a list to memorise.
Assignments between sessions are short and specific: one conversation to practise, one set of signs to read, one audio clip to respond to.
Live Workshop Session
90-minute group session with scenario-based speaking practice and instructor feedback.
Self-Paced Exercises
Reading tasks, audio drills, and written assignments released after each live session.
Peer Practice Pairs
Participants are paired weekly for a short unscripted conversation in Japanese.
Module Review
Each module closes with a practical task — simulated booking, ordering, or navigation challenge.
Who this programme suits
Adults planning a trip to Japan who want functional communication skills — not fluency. Participants range from complete beginners to those who studied Japanese briefly and retained very little.
What you leave with
A reference phrasebook you build yourself during the programme, recordings of your own speaking practice, and a clear sense of which situations you can handle independently.
Cohort size
Sessions are capped at 14 participants to keep speaking time meaningful. Larger groups make it too easy to stay silent — that defeats the purpose.
Before you enrol
Straightforward answers to the questions most participants ask before committing to the programme.
Do I need any prior knowledge of Japanese before starting?
No prior Japanese knowledge is required. The programme starts from phonetics and basic scripts, building practical vocabulary and phrases from the very first session. If you already know hiragana, you will move through the early material faster but the speaking practice remains valuable regardless.
How much time per week does the programme require?
Participants typically spend 3 to 5 hours per week — one 90-minute live session plus self-paced exercises and a short peer conversation. The exercises are designed to fit into a busy schedule without requiring long uninterrupted study blocks.
Are the sessions live or pre-recorded?
The programme combines scheduled live workshops with on-demand recordings, so participants can review material at their own pace after each session. Live attendance is strongly encouraged — the speaking practice cannot be replicated by watching a recording.
What kind of practical exercises are included?
Exercises include simulated conversations at transport hubs, restaurants, and accommodation check-ins, plus reading practice with real signage and menus. Audio tasks use authentic recordings rather than slowed-down teaching speech.
Is a certificate issued at the end of the programme?
Participants who complete all six modules and the associated assignments receive a programme completion certificate from Sparkequity. The certificate reflects participation and task completion — it is not a formal language qualification.
Can I join if I am based outside Australia?
Yes. The programme runs entirely online and accepts participants from any country. Session times are published in AEST with a converter for common time zones. Sparkequity has been delivering remote workshops internationally since 2024.
